Tyler Eckford was born on September 8, 1985 in Vancouver, British Columbia. A product of the University of Alaska-Fairbanks of the NCAA, the defenseman was selected in the seventh round of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft by the New Jersey Devils.

Eckford joined the Devils AHL affiliate in Lowell in 2008 and made his NHL debut for New Jersey during the 2009-10 season. In all he appeared in the three games for the Devils that season, recording the first assist of his career.
