Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Matt Hunwick
Matt Hunwick was born May 21, 1985 in Warren, Michigan. Boston's sixth pick (seventh round) 224th overall in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, Hunwick is a graduate of the University of Michigan.

A strong two-way player, Hunwick tallied 97 points over four seasons of college hockey at the University of Michigan. In three of his four seasons as a Wolverine, he was named the club's top defenseman and in his final year he served as captain and helped his club to the semi-finals. He made the leap to the professional ranks of hockey in 2007-08, spending the majority of his time with the Providence Bruins and earning a spot in 13 games with Boston.

2009-10 would be Hunwick's first full season in the NHL. He appeared in 76 games on the Bruins back end, contributing 6 goals and 8 assists.

On November 29, 2010, Hunwick was sent from the Bruins to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for Colby Cohen.

After four seasons in Colorado, Hunwick signed a one year contract with the New York Rangers for the 2014-15 season.

The Rangers elected not to re-sign Hunwick, so he became an unrestricted free agent once again where he signed a two year contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs in the summer of 2015.

Hunwick would spend two seasons in Toronto, providing a young Maple Leaf team with a stable veteran presence on the back end. On July 1, 2017, as an unrestricted free agent he signed a deal to join the Pittsburgh Penguins.
