Marc Staal was born January 13, 1987 in Thunder Bay, Ontario. The first round, 12th overall selection of the New York Rangers in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, Staal honed his skills with the Sudbury Wolves of the OHL over four seasons.

An imposing and sizeable defenseman, Staal appeared in 236 games with the Wolves, notching 23 goals and 100 assists for 123 points. Marc became the third Staal to compete in an NHL game when the young defenseman appeared in his first NHL game with the Rangers in October, 2008. He was a regular on the club's line-up that season, appearing in 80 games and registering 10 points.

On the international stage, Staal has represented Canada five times. This includes two Gold Medal performances at the 2006 and 2007 World Junior Championships and an appearance at the 2010 World Championship.
