Matt Niskanen was born December 6, 1986 in Virginia, Minnesota. The first round, 28th overall selection of the Dallas Stars in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, Niskanen is a graduate of the University of Minnesota-Duluth.

An offensively gifted defenseman, Niskanen joined the Dallas Stars' AHL affiliate in Iowa after completing his sophomore season at the University of Minnesota-Duluth. He made his NHL debut with the Dallas Stars during the 2007-08 season, and went on to rank first among defensemen in plus/minus (+22) through his 78 games played.

On February 21, 2011, Niskanen's time in Dallas would come to an end. He was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins along with James Neal in exchange for Alex Goligoski.

After setting career highs in goals (10) and points (46) during the 2013-14 season, Niskanen left the Penguins to signed with their rival, Washington Capitals, to a seven year contract.
