Michael Sauer was born on August 7, 1987 in St. Cloud, Minnesota. He comes by his sporting acumen naturally, his older brother, Kurt, is also an NHL defenseman and other brother, Craig, played linebacker for the NFL's Atlanta Falcons and Minnesota Vikings.

Drafted by the Rangers in 2005, he joined their AHL affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack in 2006. He would spend most of the next two seasons there, but was summoned by the Rangers in March of 2009 and would make his NHL at Madison Square Garden in a game against the Minnesota Wild. In all, he would appear in three games for the Rangers in 2008-09.
