A butterfly style netminder, Pavelec arrived in the QMJHL in 2005-06 and went on to post a 55-29 record and a 2.51 GAA through his two seasons in Cape Breton. His strong junior career also saw the Kladno native capture the QMJHL's Jacques Plante Trophy in 2006-07, awarded annually to the goalie with the lowest GAA in the league, and he was the league's top goaltender in 2005-06.

After his two-year stint in the "Q", Pavelec made his professional hockey debut the with the AHL's Chicago Wolves. During that season, Pavelec was called up for his first NHL game with the Thrashers in an early regular season game against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Prior to the 2011-12 season, Pavelec and the rest of the Thrashers moved to Winnipeg to form the Winnipeg Jets.

During the 201415 season, Pavelec set a Winnipeg Jets franchise record with three consecutive shutouts, going 187:05 without allowing a goal. His strong played helped the Jets qualify Stanley Cup playoffs for the first time since the franchise relocated from Atlanta.

After five seasons in the NHL, Pavelec was placed on waivers by the Winnipeg Jets on October 10, 2016. He would begin the season with the Manitoba Moose of the American Hockey League, but was recalled by the Jets on January 17, 2017, and made his NHL season debut the next night.

On July 1, 2017, Pavelec's time in the Jets organization would come to an end. He signed as a free agent with the New York Rangers.
