Dustin Kohn was born on February 2, 1987 in Edmonton, Alberta. A product of the Calgary Hitmen of the Western Hockey League, Kohn was selected in the second round of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft by the New York Islanders.

On January 19th, 2010 was summoned to the Islanders to make his NHL debut. He would go on to appear in 22 games for the club during the 2009-10 season, recording four assists.
