Brian Foster was born on February 4, 1987, in Pembroke, New Hampshire. A product of the University of New Hampshire, he was selected in the fifth round of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft by the Florida Panthers.
Following his collegiate career Foster spent time throughout hockey's minor leagues. He first suited up for the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs of the CHL, then was between the pipes for the Cincinnati Cyclones of the ECHL before joining the San Antonio Rampage of the American Hockey League.
Foster got his first taste of NHL action during the 2011-12 season when an injury to the Florida Panthers' goaltender necessitated his services. On February 4, 2012, Foster would come on in relief of Scott Clemmensen during the second period against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
On February 15, 2013, while playing for the Cincinnati Cyclones of the ECHL, Foster achieved a rare feat for a goaltender. He was credited with scoring a goal. He was the 11 goaltender in ECHL history to accomplish the feat.
