Kris Fredheim was born on February 23, 1987 in Campbell River, British Columbia. A product of the Notre Dame Hounds and then Colorado College, he was selected in the sixth round of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft by the Vancouver Canucks.

Following his collegiate career Fredheim joined the Victoria Salmon Kings in the lates stages of the 2009-10 season. He would sign as a free agent with the Houston Aeros of the American Hockey the following summer and join the club for the 2010-11 campaign.

On November 16, 2011, Fredheim signed a deal with the Aeros' parent club, the Minnesota Wild. He would make his NHL debut for the club the next night, seeing 10:13 of action.
