Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Semyon Varlamov
Semyon Varlamov was born on April 27, 1988. He was drafted in the first round, 23rd overall by the Washington Capitals in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.

He came to North America for the 2008-09 season and played, for the most part, with the Capitals' minor league affiliate, the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League (AHL), but when Capitals backup Brent Johnson was sidelined with a hip injury in February 2009, Varlamov assumed the backup position behind José Théodore.

During the first round of the 2009 playoffs against the New York Rangers, Varlamov was given the starting job after Théodore allowed 4 goals to lose game one. He would go on to help the Capitals advance to the second round of the playoffs for the first time since 1998 before falling to the eventual Stanley Cup champion, Pittsburgh Penguins.

On July 1, 2011, Varlamov's time in Washington would come to an end. He was traded to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for a first round draft pick.

In the 2013-14 season, Varlamov's game went to a new level. In 63 games for the Avalanche, he posted a record of 41-14-5 to go along with a 2.41 goals-against-average and a .927 save percentage. His strong play was recognized with a nomination for the Vezina Trophy at season's end.

On the international stage, Varlamov represented Russia at the 2014 Olympic Games held on home ice in Sochi.
