Ivan Vishnevskiy was born on February 18, 1988. The defenceman was selected 27th overall in the first round of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft by the Dallas Stars following three very productive years with the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies of the QMJHL.

Though he spent most of the 2008-09 season with the Peoria Rivermen in the American Hockey League, Vishnevskiy also made his National Hockey League debut, appearing in three games for the Stars, picking up a pair of assists.

On February 9, 2010, Vishnevskiy was shipped to the Atlanta Thrashers along with a fourth round draft pick in exchange for goaltender Kari Lehtonen.

On July 1, 2010 Vishnevskiy was on the move again. This time dealt to the newly crowned Stanley Cup champion, Chicago Blackhawks, in exchange for forward Andrew Ladd.
