Jeff Petry was born on December 9, 1987 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. A product of Michigan State University, he was selected by the Edmonton Oilers in the second round of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.

Following his third year at Michigan State, Petry joined the Oilers' AHL affiliate, the Oklahoma City Barons for the final eight games of the 2009-10 season. He would split time the following year between Oklahoma City and Edmonton, seeing action in 35 games for the big club and scoring the first goal of his NHL career.

Petry played in five seasons with the Oilers before he was traded to the Montreal Canadiens for a second and fifth round draft pick at the 2015 Trade deadline. After joining the Canadiens, Petry signed a six year extension with the club on June 2, 2015.

On the international stage, Petry has represented the United States three times which is highlighted by a Bronze Medal performance at the 2013 IIHF World Championship.
