Jeff Zatkoff was born on June 9, 1987 in Detroit, Michigan. He would play goal for the Sioux City Musketeers of the USHL before going to college and playing for the Miami University RedHawks. With Miami University, Zatkoff would win the CCHA Rookie of the Year as a freshman in 2006 and would be a hounorable mention as a CCHA All-Conference Team as a sophomore in 2007.

Zatkoff was selected in the third round of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, 74th overall, by the Los Angeles Kings. He would work his way up through the Kings’ system by making his professional debut with the Ontario Reign of the ECHL in the 2008-09 season before being called up to the AHL’s Manchester Monarchs.

In 2012, Zatkoff would sign with the Pittsburgh Penguins where he would play for their AHL affiliate, the Wilkes-Barrie/Scranton Penguins. In his first season there, he would win the Harry “Hap” Holmes Memorial Award along with teammate Brad Thiessen as the goaltenders who have allowed the fewest goals against over the course of the 2012-13 season.

Zatkoff would get his first NHL start on October 11, 2013 with the Pittsburgh Penguins in a 6-3 loss to the Florida Panthers. He would get his first victory on November 2, 2013 with a 3-0 shutout against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Zatkoff would serve as the Penguins backup goaltender during the 2015-16 season. In 14 games he posted a 2.79 goals-against-average and a .917 save percentage. He would also see action in two post-season games as the Penguins marched the fourth Stanley Cup title in franchise history.

Internationally, Zatkoff would represent the United States in the 2007 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships in Sweden where he helped his team to a bronze medal finish.
