Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Reto Berra
Reto Berra was born on January 3, 1987 in Bülach, Switzerland. As a product of Switzerland’s development system, Berra would become a professional with the Swiss National League B GCK Lions at the age of 17. He would then move up in the system to the Swiss National League A ZSC Lions where he would catch the attention of NHL scouts.

Berra was selected in the fourth round of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, 106th overall, by the St. Louis Blues. However, he decided to remain in Switzerland to continue to hone his goaltending skills. On April 1st, 2013, the St. Louis Blues would trade Berra’s rights, along with prospect Mark Cundari and a first round draft pick to the Calgary Flames for veteran defenseman Jay Bouwmeester.

In the 2013-14 season, Berra decided it was time to play in North America where he signed a one year contract with the Calgary Flames. He made his NHL debut on November 3, 2013 against the Chicago Blackhawks where he won the game 3-2. Due to his impending free agency, the Calgary Flames would trade Berra to the Colorado Avalanche on March 5, 2014 for a second round draft pick.

On January 16, 2015, while playing for the Avalanche’s AHL affiliate, the Lake Erie Monsters, Berra would become the 11th goalie in AHL history to score a goal by shooting the puck into an empty net against the Chicago Wolves.

On June 23, 2016, Berra was traded to the Florida Panthers and would begin the 2016-17 season with the club's AHL affiliate, the Springfield Thunderbirds. He suit up 31 games for the Thunderbirds, recording a goal-against-average on 2.53 to go along with a .910 save percentage. He was recalled by the Panthers late in the season and would appear in seven games for the club as the season came to an end. On July 5, 2017, Berra signed as a free agent with the Anaheim Ducks.

Internationally, Berra has represented Switzerland in the World Junior Championships, the IIHF World Championships and in the 2014 Winter Olympic Games. He was a key contributor to the Switzerland team that surprised the hockey world with a silver medal in the 2013 IIHF World Championships in Sweden and Finland.
