Olivier Magnan was born on May 1, 1986 in Sherbrooke, Quebec. A product of the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, he was selected in the fifth round of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft by the New Jersey Devils.

Magnan joined the Devils' AHL affiliate during the 2006-07 season, where he would spend the better part of five seasons before finally reaching the NHL. He would make his NHL debut for New Jersey on October 21, 2010 against the Montreal Canadiens. He would go on to see action in 18 NHL games during the 2010-11 season.
