Alex Plante was born on May 9, 1989 in Brandon, Manitoba. The 15th overall selection in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft by the Edmonton Oilers, Plante comes by his hockey affinity naturally; his father Cam was a professional defenseman as well, playing in two games for the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1984-85.

Following a successful junior career in the WHL, Plante made his professional debut with the Oilers' AHL affiliate in Springfield in 2009-10 and made his NHL debut on February 1, 2010. In all he would appear in four games for the Oilers in 2009-10.
