A native of Ann Arbor, Michigan, Ian Cole was drafted 18th overall by the St. Louis Blues in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. He played his collegiate hockey at the University of Notre Dame where he helped the Fighting Irish to the school's first Frozen Four appearance.

Cole joined the Blues' AHL affiliate, the Peoria Rivermen, to finish the 2009-10 season would get his first taste of NHL action early on in the 2010-11 season. In total, he would appear in 26 games for the Blues' in 2010-11, recording a goal and adding three assists.

At the 2015 trade deadline, Cole was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins for Robert Bortuzzo and a seventh round pick. After being traded to the Penguins, he signed a three year extension with the team. The move proved to be a fortunate one for Cole as he and the Penguins would go on to capture the Stanley Cup the following season. Cole would appear in all 25 of the Penguins post-season contests the following season, recording nine assists and Pittsburgh marched to their second consecutive Stanley Cup victory.

On the international stage, Cole represented the United States three times at the World Junior Championships where he won a Bronze Medal in 2007 and finished out of the medals in 2008 and 2009.
