Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Cory Murphy
Cory Murphy was born February 13, 1978 in Kanata, Ontario. Undrafted, the free agent honed his skills in the NCAA at Colgate University.

A hard working defenseman, Murphy spent four years at Colgate University and through his tenure tallied 28 goals and 83 assists. He spent the next four seasons of his professional hockey career competing overseas in the Finish league with the Blues and Ilves Tamper. Murphy joined the Swiss league in 2005-06 before he returned to the Finnish league the following season where he captured the leagues MVP award.

Murphy returned to North America in 2007-08, signing as a free agent with the NHL's Florida Panthers. During his first NHL season, he scored 17 points but was sidelined for 30 games due to a shoulder injury.

In the 2008-09 season, Cory played seven games for the Panthers before being sent to their AHL affiliate, the Rochester Americans, for a two-week conditioning stint. Upon being recalled, Murphy was claimed off re-entry waivers by the Tampa Bay Lightning on January 19, 2009.

On July 17, 2009, he was signed by the New Jersey Devils as an unrestricted free agent.
