Robert Klinkhammer was born on August 12, 1986 in Lethbridge, Alberta. His junior career in the Western Hockey League saw stops with his hometown Hurricanes, the Seattle Thunderbirds, Portland Winter Hawks and the Brandon Wheat Kings before being signed as an unrestricted free agent by the Tampa Bay Lightning of the NHL.

Klinkhammer would join the Norfolk Admirals of the AHL for the 2007-08 season. The folowing summer as a free agent he would sign on with the Chicago Blackhawks and join their AHL affiliate, the Rockford IceHogs, for the 2009-10 season.

Klinkhammer would make his NHL debut for the Blackhawks on December 10, 2010 before being returned to the AHL for the remainder of the season.

On December 2, 2011, Klinkhammer was traded to the Ottawa Senators in exchange for a seventh round draft pick. He would join the Senator's AHL affiliate in Binghamton and got his first shot with the Senators on March 4, 2012. He would go on to see action in 15 games for Ottawa during the 2011-12 season, recording a pair of assists.

On July 3, 2012, Klinkhammer signed as an unrestricted free agent with the Phoenix Coyotes.

After two seasons with the Coyotes, Klinkhammer, along with a fifth round draft pick was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins for Philip Samuelsson on December 5, 2014.

Almost a year later, Klinkhammer was traded again, along with a first round draft pick, to the Edmonton Oilers for David Perron.

Missed majority of 2015-16 due to lower-body (October 27, 2015 at Minnesota) and ankle (December 15, 2016 at NY Rangers) injuries. Signed as a free agent by Minsk (KHL), June 17, 2016.
