Sean Collins was on born October 30, 1983 in Troy, Michigan. Following four years at Ohio State University, Collins was signed as a free agent by the Washington Capitals.

Collins began his professional career in the AHL with the Hershey Bears and would see his first NHL action during the 2008-09 season, appearing in 15 games for the Capitals. He would spend the majority of the next five seasons with the Bears, receiving a few recalls to the Capitals.

On July 12, 2012, Collins' time in the Capitals organization would come to an end. As an unrestricted free agent he inked a deal with the New York Rangers and would join the club's AHL affiliate, the Connecticut Whale for the 2012-13 season. He would suit up for 76 games for the club in his first season, recording 13 assists and 46 penalty minutes.
