Anssi Salmela was born in Nokia, Finland on August 13, 1984. Though he was undrafted, he played for the Finnish team at the 2008 IIHF World Championships and signed a contract with the New Jersey Devils shortly after.

Salmela made his NHL debut for the Devils in 2008, but spent the majority of his time with New Jersey's AHL affiliate the Albany River Rats. He was traded to the Atlanta Thrashers in March of 2009 and scored his first NHL goal on March 16.

On February 4, 2010, Salmela was sent back to New Jersey as part of the trade that saw the Devils acquire all-star Ilya Kovalchuk.
