Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Erik Karlsson
Erik Karlsson was born on May 31, 1990. He was selected 15th overall by the Ottawa Senators in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.

Karlsson surprised many by making the Senators out of training camp in 2009. Though he was assigned the club's AHL affiliate after just nine games, he was recalled after just one month and spent the remainder of the 2009-10 with the Senators. In 60 games he registered 26 points, among the best of all rookie rearguards.

Karlsson was named to the Swedish team at the 2010 World Championships and led all Swedish defenseman in scoring for the tournament.

In 2011-12, Karlsson's 78 points was 25 better than any other defenseman in the NHL and played a key role in the Ottawa Senators star being named the 2011-12 Norris Trophy winner. He also showed huge growth in his overall game, posting a +16 rating, a 46 point improvement over the previous season.

At just 22 years of age, Karlsson was the youngest winner of the Norris Trophy since Dennis Potvin won his first in 1976. Karlsson received 66 first place votes, narrowly edging out Shea Weber who received 49 and Zdeno Chara with 32.

Erik Karlsson won the Norris Trophy once again after the 2014-15 season where he scored 21 goals and 66 points in 82 games.

On the international stage, Karlsson has represented his native Sweden numerous times, including two appearances at the World Championship (2010 and 2012) and a silver medal at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games.
