Tyler Cuma was born on January 19, 1990 in Toronto, Ontario. A standout defenceman for the Ottawa 67's of the Ontario Hockey League, Cuma was selected in the first round of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft by the Minnesota Wild.

Cuma made his professional debut for the Wild's AHL affiliate, the Houston Aeros, during the 2010-11 season. In 31 AHL games he would record one goal and add three assists.

During the 2011-12 season Cuma would get his first taste of NHL action. He was summoned to the Minnesota Wild for single game in which he would record the first minor penalty of his NHL career.
