Aaron Ness was born on May 18, 1990 in Roseau, Minnesota. A product of the University of Minnesota, he was selected by the New York Islanders in the second round (40th overall) of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.

Ness made his professional debut at the American Hockey League level with the Bridgeport Sound Tiger in 2011-12. In 69 games he would record five goals and 22 assists. His impressive play earned him his first taste of NHL action. He would suit up for nine games for the Islanders during 2011-12 showing himself to be a reliable defender.
