Michael Stone was born on June 7, 1990 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. A product of the Western Hockey League's Calgary Hitmen, he was selected in the third round of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft by the Phoenix Coyotes.

Stone would make his professional debut for the San Antonio Rampage of the American Hockey League in 2010-11. He would appear in 70 games for the club, recording a pair of goals and adding 11 assists.

In 2011-12 Stone would get his first taste of NHL action. He would suit up for 13 games for the Coyotes and would prove to be a capable defender. He would score the first goal of his NHL career and add two assists.

Stone would appear om 75 games for the Coyotes during the 2015-16 season and would establish new career-highs in assists and points, with 30 and 36 respectively. On February 20, 2017, Stone's time in Arizona would come to an end. He was traded to the Calgary Flames in exchange for a pair of draft picks.
