Johan Motin was born on October 10, 1989. He was elected 103rd overall by the Edmonton Oilers in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.

Motin joined the Oilers' AHL affiliate in Springfield for the 2009-10 season, but got his first taste of NHL action when he was called up on an emergency basis on March 3, 2010 to play in his first National Hockey League game.
