Greg Pateryn was born on June 20, 1990, in Sterling Heights, Michigan. A standout defender for Brother Rice High School, he then joined the Ohio Jr. Blue Jackets of the USHL for one season and was selected by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the fifth round of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.

Pateryn would then attend the University of Michigan, suiting up for the Wolverines for four seasons. Upon completion of his collegiate career, Pateryn was an unrestricted free agent and signed a deal with the Montreal Canadiens on March 28, 2012.

Pateryn would make his professional debut in the American Hockey League for the Hamilton Bulldogs during the 2012-13 season. In 39 games for the club he would tally seven goals and five assists for twelve points. He would also get his first taste of NHL action during the lockout-shortened season, appearing in the three games for the Canadiens, though he would fail to register a point.

Pateryn cracked the Canadiens opening night roster to start the the 201617 season. He would suit up in 24 games for the club before being traded to the Dallas Stars in exchange for Jordie Benn. Pateryn would finish the season with the Stars and suit up in 73 games for the club during the 2017-18 season. In the summer of 2018, as an unrestricted free agent, Pateryn signed a three-year deal with the Minnesota Wild.

Traded to Montreal by Toronto with Toronto's 2nd round pick (later traded to Chicago, later traded back to Toronto, later traded to Boston - Boston selected Jared Knight) in 2010 NHL Draft for Mikhail Grabovski, July 3, 2008. Missed majority of 2015-16 as a healthy reserve. Traded to Dallas by Montreal with Montreal's 4th round pick (later traded to Los Angeles - Los Angeles selected Markus Phillips) in 2017 NHL Draft for Jordie Benn, February 27, 2017.
