Luke Witkowski was born on April 14, 1990 in Holland, Michigan. He played his collegiate hockey for the Western Michigan University for four years and was selected in the sixth round of the 2008 NHL entry draft by the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Following his college career, Witkowski would join the Ligntning's AHL affiliate, the Syracuse Crunch for the final three games of their season. He would go on to spend the majority of his first two years as a professional at the American League level.

During the 2014-15 season Witkowski would get his first taste of NHL action. In total he would appear in 16 games for the Lightning. He would not record a point, but the scrappy defender did record 15 penalty minutes.

Witkowski would appear in 34 games for the Lightning during the 2016-17 season, recording the first four points of his NHL career. On July 1, 2017, Witkowski's time in Tampa would come to an end. As an unrestricted free agent he signed with the Detroit Red Wings.
