Matt Bartkowski was born on June 4, 1988 in Mt. Lebanon, Pennsylvania. He played his collegiate hockey at Ohio State University and was selected in the seventh round of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft by the Florida Panthers.

Bartkowski was traded to the Boston Bruins on March 3, 2010 along with Dennis Seidenberg in exchange for for Byron Bitz, Craig Weller, and a 2nd round draft pick. He made his NHL debut for the Bruins the following season in a game against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Bartowski would spend the majority of the lockout-shortened season with at the American League level with the Providence Bruins. He would appear in 56 games for the club, recording 24 points. He would also see action in 11 regular season games for Boston during 2012-13 and suit up in 7 playoff games for the club.

On July 1, 2015, Bartkowski signed a one year contract with the Vancouver Canucks. After just one season with the Canucks, Bartowski found himself a free agent once again. He signed a deal with the Providence Bruins and joined the club to start the 2016-17 season at the American Hockey League level. After 34 games for Providence, Bartowski signed a deal with the Calgary Flames and joined the club for the remainder of the season.
