Stefan Della Rovere was born on February 25, 1990 in Richmond Hill, Ontario. He played his junior hockey with the Barrie Colts of the Ontario Hockey League and participated in two World Junior Championships for Canada, winning gold in 2009 and silver in 2010.

Della Rovere was selected by the Washington Capitals in the seventh round of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, but would not suit up for the club. Instead he was traded to the St. Louis Blues in exchange for D.J. King and would make his NHL debut on December 1, 2010 against the team that drafted him, the Washington Capitals.
