Stu Bickel was born on October 2, 1986 in Chanhassen, Minnesota. Following one year at the University of Minnesota Bickel was signed as an unrestricted free agent by the Anaheim Ducks on July 2, 2008. He made his professional debut in the American Hockey League for the Duck's AHL affiliate, the Iowa Chops the following season.

On November 23, 2010, Bickel was traded by the Ducks to the New York Rangers in exchange for defenseman Nigel Williams. After starting the 2011-12 season in the AHL with the Connecticut Whale, Bickel was called up to the Rangers on December 18, 2011. He made his NHL debut on December 20, 2011 against the New Jersey Devils and recorded his first NHL point in his first NHL game. He would go on to appear in 51 regular season games for the Rangers and each of the club's 18 playoff games, providing grit and stability from the back end.
