Oliver Ekman-Larsson was born on July 17, 1991 in Karlskrona, Sweden. A highly-touted prospect, Ekman-Larsson was selected sixth overall by the Phoenix Coyotes in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. Ekman-Larsson would appear in 48 games for the Coyotes during the 2010-11 season, scoring his first NHL goal on January 17, 2011 in a game against the San Jose Sharks.

At season's end, Ekman-Larsson joined the Swedish team at the World Championships where he helped his homeland to the bronze medal.

In his second NHL season, Ekman-Larsson recorded an impressive 13 goals, the fifth most of any rearguard in the league.

At the 2014 Winter Olympics, Ekman-Larsson would represent Sweden once again. This time he helped his homeland to the silver medal.

Ekman-Larsson would continue to grow into one of the game's elite defenceman. Appearing in all 82 games during the 2014-15 season, he was the NHL's leading goal-scoring rear guard. He found the back of the net 23 times and added 20 assists for 43 points. The following season, Ekman-Larsson reached the 20-goal mark once again and his 55 points were tops on the Coyotes.

In the summer of 2018, Ekman-Larsson inked an eight-year contract extension with the Coyotes. He was later named the club's captain, becoming the fourth captain since the franchise relocated from Winnipeg in 1996.
