Calvin de Haan was born on May 9, 1991 in Carp, Ontario. A product of the Oshawa Generals of the Ontario Hockey League, de Haan was selected in the first round, 12th overall, at the 2009 NHL Entry Draft by the New York Islanders.

On the international stage, de Haan represented Canada twice at the World Junior Championships, winning silver medals both times.

In 2011, de Haan made his professional debut with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, the AHL affiliate of the New York Islanders. He would spend the majority of the 2011-12 season with the club, recording 16 points in 56 games. On December 15, 2011, de Haan would get his first taste of NHL action when he suited up for the Islanders against the Dallas Stars.
