Mathew Clark was born on October 17, 1990 in Lakewood, Colorado. A product of the Brampton Battalion of the Ontario Hockey League, Clark was selected in the second round, 37th overall, of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.

He joined the Manitoba Moose of the American Hockey League in the late stages of the 2009-10 season, seeing action in one regular season game and six post-season.

The following season (2010-11) Clark spent with the Syracuse Crunch. In 80 games, the physical defender recorded two goals and 14 assists to go along with 128 penalty minutes.

Clark would get his first taste of life in the NHL late in the 2011-12 season, suiting up for two games for the Ducks during the final week of the season.
