Philip Samuelsson was born on July 26, 1991 in Leksand, Sweden. He is the son of two-time Stanley Cup winner, Ulf Samuelsson. Though born in Sweden, he was raised in the United States where he became a product of the US National Development Program and the USHLís Chicago Steel. He was drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the second round, 61st overall, in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.

The 6í2 defenseman would play two years in the NCAA with the Boston College Eagles. In his freshman year, he helped the Eagles to the fourth NCAA Tournament Championship in 2010. Samuelsson would make his professional debut during the 2011-12 season, splitting some time with the AHLís Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and the ECHLís Nailers.

Samuelsson would get his first crack at the NHL on December 16, 2013 in a 3-1 victory against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Less than a year later on December 5, 2014, Samuelsson was traded to the Arizona Coyotes in exchange for Rob Klinkhammer and a conditional fifth round pick.

In the summer of 2016, Samuelsson signed with the Montreal Canadiens and would join their AHL affiliate, the St. John's IceCaps, to start the 2016-17 season. In 40 games for the club he would record a goal and add four assists. On February 21, 2017, Samuelsson's time within the Canadiens organization would come to an end. He was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for Keegan Lowe.

On the international stage, Samuelsson represented the United States once during the IIHF World Under 18 Championships where he helped his team to a gold medal.
