Tyson Barrie was born on July 26, 1991 In Victoria, British Columbia. Following a stint for the Juan de Fuca Grizzlies of the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League, Barrie began his major junior career in the Western Hockey League with the Kelowna Rockets at the tail end of the 2006-07 season. He would eventually serve as captain for the Rockets.

Barrie was selected in the third round of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft by the Colorado Avalanche and made his professional debut in the 2011-12 season, assigned to the Avalanche's American Hockey League affiliate, the Lake Erie Monsters.

As the Monster's leading scorer at the midway point of the 2011-12 season, Barrie was named to the AHL's Western Conference All-Star Game where the defenceman scored a goal in a winning cause. Soon after Barrie was rewarded with his first call up to the NHL. He would appear in 10 games for the Avalanche during the 2011-12 season, though he failed to record a point.

Barrie would spend the 2013-14 season predominantly with the Avalanche. In 64 games, he recorded 13 goals and added 25 assists for 38 points. His 13 goals were the most of any Avalanche defenceman.

Barrie would establish new career-highs in assists and points in 2014-15. Appearing in 80 games, he tallied 12 goals to go along with 41 assists for 53 points. At the end of the season, he was chosen to represent Canada at the World Championship, where he helped his homeland to the gold medal.
