Joonas Nättinen was born on January 3, 1991 in Jämsä, Finland. While playing in the Finish Elite League for the Espoo Blues, he was drafted in the third round, 65th overall, by the Montreal Canadiens in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.
Nättinen would continue to play in the Finnish Elite League where he would hone his skills against older opponents before signing his three-year entry level deal with the Canadiens on May 26, 2011. He would play the better part of three seasons with the Canadiens’ AHL affiliate, the Hamilton Bulldogs putting up 24 goals and 45 points over that three year period.
The Montreal Canadiens would call up Joonas for his NHL debut on January 18, 2014 in a 5-3 loss against the Toronto Maple Leafs. After the season Nättinen would choose to leave North America to play for Modo of the Swedish Hockey League.
On the international stage, Nättinen has represented Finland six different times. His Finnish teams ended in 6th place in the World U17 Hockey Challenge in 2008 and in the 2008 IIHF World U18 Championships. The next year they would win the bronze medal in the 2009 IIHF World U18 Championships and finish 7th in the IIHF World U20 Championships. While in both 2010 and 2011, Finland would finish in 6th place at the IIHF World U20 Championships.
