Matt Hackett was born on March 7, 1990 on London, Ontario. Hackett began his junior career with the Windsor Spitfires, before being traded to the Plymouth Whalers of the Ontario Hockey League. He was selected in the third round of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft by the Minnesota Wild.

Hackett would make his professional debut in the American Hockey League with the Houston Aeros during the 2010-11 season. In 45 games he put up an impressive 2.37 goals-against-average with a .916 save percentage.

The following season Hackett would get his first taste of NHL action. He would appear in 12 games foe Minnesota, recording the first three winds of his NHL career.

During the lockout shortened 201213 season, Hackett was dealt at the trade deadline on April 3, 2013, along with Johan Larsson and a package of draft picks to the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for Jason Pominville.

Hackett made his debut with the Sabres on March 20, 2014 against the Edmonton Oilers. He made 35 saves in a 2-1 victory. He would go on to appear in eight games for the Sabres in the late stages of the 2013-14 season, posting a 3.10 goals against average and .908 save percentage.
