Seth Helgeson was born on October 8, 1990 in Faribault, Minnesota. A product of the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers, he was drafted in the fourth round of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft by the New Jersey Devils.

After playing four years University of Minnesota, Helgeson was assigned to the Devils AHL affiliate, the Albany Devils, to finish the 2012-13 season. Helgeson played the better part of two seasons in Albany before he was recalled to play for the NHL club in New Jersey. He made his NHL debut on November 11, 2014 in a 3-1 victory against the Minnesota Wild. He would go on to appear in 22 games for the Devils during the 2014-15 season, recording a pair of assists.

The big defenceman would spend the majority of the next two seasons at the American Hockey League level, but he would suit up in 19 games for New Jersey in 2015-16 and nine games the following year, recording the first goal of his career on February 4, 2016. In the summer of 2017, as an unrestricted free agent, Helgeson signed with the New York Islanders.
