Erik Haula was born on March 23, 1991 in Pori, Finland. The 5’11 centre was playing for Shattuck-Saint Mary in Fairbault, Minnesota when he was drafted in the seventh round, 182nd overall, by the Minnesota Wild in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. Haula had committed to play for the University of Minnesota Gophers, making him the second player born outside of North America to play for the team.

Before joining the Gophers, Haula would play for the Omaha Lancers of the USHL for the 2009-10 season where he was named to both the All-Star and All-Rookie Teams. After his only season in the USHL, Haula would play for the University of Minnesota between the 2010-11 and 2012-13 seasons. In his three seasons, he would score 42 goals and 124 points before forgoing his last year of eligibility to sign his entry level contract with the Minnesota Wild.

After signing his NHL contract, Haula was sent to Minnesota’s AHL affiliate, the Iowa Wild. During the 2013-14 season he would split time between Iowa and Minnesota. He would make his NHL debut with Minnesota in a 3-1 loss to the Colorado Avalanche where he also scored his first NHL point and named the third star of the game. He would establish himself as an NHL player by playing 46 games in Minnesota during the 2013-14 season. The following season, Haula would play in 72 games for the Wild with seven goals and fourteen points.

On the international stage, Haula has represented Finland five times. He helped Finland to a sixth place finish in the 2008 World U17 Hockey Challenge. Haula would lead Finland twice at the 2008 and 2009 IIHF World U18 Championships where he would help them to a 6th place and Bronze Medal finish respectively. In 2011 he would lead Finland to a 6th place finish in the IIHF World Junior Championships. While in 2014, he would be on the Finnish Silver Medal winning team at the IIHF World Championships.
