Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Adam Almqvist
Adam Almqvist was born on February 27, 1991 in Jönköping, Sweden. The 5’11 defenseman was playing for HV71 in Sweden when he was draft by the Detroit Red Wings in the seventh round, 210th overall, in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. He would play the majority of five years in Sweden before taking his shot at playing professionally in North America.

At the end of 2011-2012 season, Almqvist left Sweden and made his first appearance in North America playing for the Red Wings’ AHL affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins. In his first full season in the AHL the following year, Almqvist helped the Griffins to a Calder Cup Championship where he played in 21 playoff games before being taken out of the lineup due to injury.

In his final season with the Griffins, Almqvist would be named to the AHL Second All-Star Team with 4 goals and 53 points that season. He would also be rewarded by the Detroit Red Wings who called him up to make his NHL debut on November 4, 2013 in a 4-2 loss to the Winnipeg Jets. Three days later Almqvist would score his first NHL goal in a 4-3 loss in overtime to the Dallas Stars.

At the conclusion of the 2013-14 season, Almqvist would leave the Red Wings as a restricted free agent to go to the KHL and play for the Severstal Cherepovets on June 25, 2014.
