Nathan Lawson was born on September 29, 1983 in Calgary, Alberta. The goaltender played his collegiate hockey at the University of Alaska Anchorage and though undrafted by an NHL club, he made his professional debut in the ECHL.

After three seasons spent between the ECHL and the American Hockey League, Lawson made his NHL in December of 2010 for the New York Islanders. In total he would strap the pads on in 10 games for the Islanders during the 2010-11 campaign.

On July 5, 2011, Lawson signed a one-year deal with the Montreal Canadiens. He spent the season with the Hamilton Bulldogs, playing 57 games and recording five shutouts.

On July 16, 2012, once again an unrestricted free agent, Lawson signed a one-year contract with the Ottawa Senators.
