Ryan Stanton was born on July 20, 1989, in St. Albert, Alberta. A product of the Moose Jaw Warriors of the Western Hockey League, he was undrafted by an NHL club, but signed by the Chicago Blackhawks on March 12, 2010.

Stanton would join the Blackhawks' AHL affiliate, the Rockford IceHogs, for the tail end of the 2009-10 season, appearing in two regular season and a pair of playoff games.

For the better part of the next three seasons, Stanton would patrol the blueline for the IceHogs, racking up over 330 penalty minutes along the way. On April 27th 2013, Stanton made his NHL debut. Suiting up for the Blackhawks in a 3-1 defeat at the hands of the St. Louis Blues.

On September 30, 2013, Stanton was waived by the Blackhawks and subsequently claimed by the Vancouver Canucks. He would spend the 2013-14 season with Vancouver, notching his first NHL goal on October 17 against the Buffalo Sabres.

Stanton appeared in 54 games for the Canucks during the 2014-15 season and scored three times while adding eight assists. As a free agent the following summer he signed with the Washington Capitals and would join the club's AHL affiliate in Hershey for the 2015-16 season. In 60 games for Hershey the defenceman scored four times and added 12 assists.

As a free agent again in the summer of 2016 Stanton signed with the Colorado Avalanche. Early in the 2016-17 season he was on the move again. This time traded to the Columbus Blue Jackets. He was immediately assigned to the Cleveland Monsters of the AHL where he would finish the season. In the summer of 2017, Stanton continued his nomadic lifestyle, signing as a free agent with the Edmonton Oilers.
