Chris Breen was born on June 29, 1989 in Uxbridge, Ontario. The product of the OHLís Saginaw Spirit, Erie Otters, and Peterborough Petes went undrafted in the NHL Entry Draft. After his fifth and final season in the OHL, the Calgary Flames gave him a tryout with their AHL affiliate, the Abbotsford Heat at the end of the 2009-10 season. Though he only played one game for the Heat that season, the Flames elected to sign him as an unrestricted free agent.

Breen would spend parts of the next four seasons from 2010-11 to 2013-14 with the Abbotsford Heat where he would be a regular defenseman for the team and establishing himself as an NHL prospect. On October 22, 2013, Breen would make his NHL debut with the Calgary Flames in a 4-2 loss to the Phoenix Coyotes. He would get his first NHL point on April 3, 2014 in a 4-1 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning.

On July 1, 2014, Breen would leave the Flames as an unrestricted free agent and sign with the Boston Bruins. In his first year in the Bruinsí organization, Breen played 52 games with their AHL affiliate, the Providence Bruins.
