Derek Forbort was born on March 4, 1992, in Duluth, Minnesota. A product of the USHL, the big defenceman was selected in the first round of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft by the Los Angeles Kings and would go on to attend University of North Dakota.

After three seasons in North Dakota, Forbot made his professional debut at the American League level with the Manchester Monarchs in the late stages of the 2012-13 season. He would spend the next two seasons with the Monarchs before reaching the NHL level during the 2015-16 season. He would appear in 14 games for the Kings, scoring a goal and adding an assists.

On the international stage Forbot helped the United States to gold at the 2010 World U18 Championship and to bronze at the 2011 World Junior Championship.
