Alexander Petrovic was born on March 3, 1992 in Edmonton, Alberta. A product of the Western Hockey League, where he patrolled the blue line for the Red Deer Rebels, Petrovic was selected in the second round of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft by the Florida Panthers.

Following his final junior campaign Petrovic made his professional debut in the American Hockey League for the San Antonio Rampage. He would suit up for five regular season games for the club and nine post-season games.

Petrovic would spend the majority of his first full professional season (2012-13) in the American Hockey League. He would suit up in 55 games for the Rampage, recording four goals and 13 assists. He would also see the ice for the first games of the his NHL career.

Petrovic spent the entire 2015-16 season with the Panthers. Suiting up in 66 games for the club, he scored twice and added 15 assists while providing the club a physical presence on the back end.
