Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Michael Bournival
Michael Bournival was born on May 31, 1992 in Shawinigan, Quebec. The product of the Shawinigan Cataractes of the QMJHL was drafted in the third round, 71st overall, by the Colorado Avalanche in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. It would be only a couple of months later when the Montreal Canadians would trade Ryan O’Byrne for the rights to Bournival on November 11, 2010.

Bournival was a key cog as captain during Shawinigan’s Memorial Cup run. During his final year with the team in the 2011-12 season, he would score 30 goals and 56 points to help Shawinigan be in a great position to win it. Despite the fact that they would lose to the Saint John’s Sea Dogs in a four game sweep, Shawinigan would gain a birth into the Memorial Cup Tournament because they would the host of the tournament that year.

During the Memorial Cup Tournament, Bournival would be one of the top scorers in the tournament where he would score 3 goals and 7 points, helping the team beat the London Knights to win the Memorial Cup in overtime with a 2-1 score.

After his QMJHL career was over, the Canadiens would assign him to their AHL affiliate, the Hamilton Bulldogs, where he would spend the entire 2012-13 season. The following season Bournival would make his NHL debut on October 5, 2013 in a 4-1 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers. During the 2013-14 season Bournival would play in 60 NHL games scoring 7 goals and 14 points.

In the 2014-15 season Bournival would only play 29 games in the NHL due to a concussion. At the start of the next season, Bournival would be assigned to the Canadiens’ new affiliate, the St. John’s IceCaps.

On July 1, 2016, as an unrestricted free agent, Bournival signed with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

On the international stage, Bournival has represented Canada twice which was highlighted by a bronze medal showing at the 2012 World Junior Championship.
