John Ramage was born on February 7, 1991, in Mississauga, Ontario and grew up in St. Louis, Missouri. A product of the St. Louis Bandits of the NAHL and the USNTDP, he was selected in the in the fourth round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft by the Calgary Flames.

Ramage then attended the University of Wisconsin where he spent four seasons with the Badgers. Following his collegiate career he joined the Abbotsford Heat of the American Hockey League. In his first professional campaign he appeared in 50 games, recording a single assist.

On April 11, 2015, Ramage made his NHL debut, suiting up for the Flames in a 5–1 loss to the Winnipeg Jets.

On July 3, 2015, Ramage's time in the Flames organization would come to an end. As an unrestricted free agent he signed a deal with the Columbus Blue Jackets.

During his third season within the Blue Jackets organization, Ramage was traded to the Arizona Coyotes in exchange for future considerations. Just one month later, Ramage was on the move once again. This time traded by the Coyotes along with Tyler Gaudet to the Nashville Predators in exchange for Pierre-Cédric Labrie and Trevor Murphy. On July 1, 2018, Ramage was on the move once again. This time as an unrestricted free agent he signed a one-year deal with the New Jersey Devils.

On the international stage Ramage was twice a member of the American team at the World Junior Championship. He captured gold in 2010 and bronze, while serving as captain, in 2011.
