Tyler Bunz was born on February 11, 1992 in St. Albert, Alberta. A product of the Medicine Hat Tigers of the Western Hockey League, the goaltender was selected in the fifth round of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft by the Edmonton Oilers.

Bunz would make his professional debut during the 2012-13 season. He spent the majority of time with the Stockton Thunder of the ECHL, but also tended goal for a single game at the American Hockey League level for the Oklahoma City Barons.

The 2013-14 season would be more of the same for Bunz. He saw action in five games for the Barons and 13 games in the ECHL for the Bakersfield Condors.

Bunz got his first taste of NHL action on April 2, 2015. He came in relief of Ben Scrivens, allowing three goals on 12 shots in an Oilers 8-2 loss at the hands of the Los Angeles Kings.
