Justin Florek was born on May 18, 1990 in Marquette, Michigan. The product of the Northern Michigan University Wildcats of the NCAA was drafted in the fifth round, 135th overall by the Boston Bruins in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.

During his four year career with the Wildcats, he would be captain them for the 2011-12 season. In that senior season, Florek would be named to the 2012 CCHA All-Star Team and be a finalist as the CCHA Best Defensive Forward.

Upon his graduation, the Bruins would assign Florek to their AHL affiliate team, the Providence Bruins where he would end the 2011-12 season. He would play the entire 2012-13 season in Providence but the parent team Bruins would promote him half way through the 2013-14 season. On January 4, 2014, Florek made his NHL debut in a 4-1 victory over the Winnipeg Jets. Florek would play four games in the NHL that season.

In the 2014-15 season, Florek would stay in Providence for the entire season as his contract would expire with the Bruins. As a free agent he would sign a one year contract with the New York Islanders who assigned him to their AHL affiliate, the Bridge Port Sound Tigers.

On the international stage, Florek would represent the United States once in Bronze Medal performance at the 2008 IIHF World Under 18 Championships.
